Hold on for dear life。 2. ATH - All time high历史最高价格。 5. TO THE MOON 飞奔到月球!

I AM HODLING此段落大致讲述 GameKyuubi 发布 "I AM HODLING" 帖子,以及 HODL 一词成为 meme 素材的相关内容。 民间词语HODL 有时被解释为是 "hold on for dear life" 的首字母缩写或其它意思。

HODL(Hold On for Dear Life;充满信心长期持有投资)加密货币社群最常见的用语之一就是HODL。 SAFUSAFU这个用语来自Bizonacci上传的meme图,图中以 Binance的 行政总裁CZ Zhao为主角,配上字句 “Your Funds Are SAFU with Binance”(币安让你的资金 "SAFU");meme图在加密货币社群迅速流行,这也间接让币安推出紧急保险基金时,命名为「安全资产基金(Secure Asset Fund for Users)」,这是一种紧急保险基金,由交易费用的10%资助。 ROI(Return on Investment;投资回报率)ROI是投资者常见的术语,通常指投资回报率。 ATH(All-Time High;历史最高价位)这个用语意思简单直接,就是指该资产的历史最高纪录价位。 ATL(All-Time Low;历史最低价位)相对ATH而言,ATL自然是指,该项资产的历史最低价格纪录。 DYOR(Do Your Own Research;投资前自己做好研究)在进行任何投资之前,这可能是最关键和最重要的用语之一。 AML(Anti-Money Laundering;反洗黑钱)AML即所谓「反洗黑钱」,是指为防止犯罪分子非法取得金钱作为收入而制定的法规、法律和程序。 KYC(Know Your Customer;客户审查)所有加密货币用户应该知道的12个用语中,最后一个是KYC、「了解你的客户」或客户审查。

What Does HODL Mean?

HODL is a term derived from a misspelling of "hold," in the context of buying and holding Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. It's also commonly come to stand for "hold on for dear life" among crypto investors.

The term originated from a 2013 online post to the Bitcointalk forum where the typo appeared. The price of Bitcoin in 2013 was volatile at the time, surging to over $950 at the beginning of December, 2013, up from just over $130 in April of the same year. The poster encouraged people not to sell and that they were "hodling" [sic].

Key Takeaways

HODL is a crypto slang term meaning to buy-and-hold indefinitely. It implies not selling when markets go down or become volatile.Sometimes it is said to mean "hold on for dear life".HODL originated from a typo of "holding" as "hodling" in a 2013 online post.Today, it is a core tenet of many Bitcoin and crypto believers.

Investopedia / Daniel Fishel

What Is HODLING?

At 10:03 a.m. UTC on Dec. 18, Bitcointalk online forum user GameKyuubi posted a purportedly drunk, semi-coherent, typo-laden rant about the user's poor trading skills and determination to simply hold his Bitcoin from that point on:

I AM HODLING

I type d that tyitle twice because I knew it was wrong the first time. Still wrong. w/e," GameKyuubi wrote about the now-famous misspelling of "holding." "WHY AM I HOLDING? I'LL TELL YOU WHY," he continued. "It's because I'm a bad trader and I KNOW I'M A BAD TRADER. Yeah you good traders can spot the highs and the lows pit pat piffy wing wong wang just like that and make a millino bucks sure no problem bro.

GameKyuubi concluded that the best course was to hold, since "You only sell in a bear market if you are a good day trader or an illusioned noob. The people inbetween hold. In a zero-sum game such as this, traders can only take your money if you sell." He then confessed he'd had some whiskey and briefly mused about the spelling of whisk(e)y.

Within an hour, "HODL" had become a meme. Initially, the memes generated referenced the epic battle movies 300 and Braveheart, but there are now countless HODL memes floating around the internet. Many HODL memes now reference Game of Thrones' Hodor.

The prices of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are notoriously volatile, but HODLers disregard even large price swings. They simply HODL.

HODLING as a Strategy and Guiding Philosophy

HODL, as an acronym for "hold on for dear life," has become a mantra among crypto enthusiasts denoting a long-term approach to cryptocurrency investing. This approach mirrors GameKyuubi's rationale in the original post that novice traders are likely to botch their attempts to time the market, and should simply hold their coin.

For cryptocurrency maximalists, HODL represents more than a strategy for reigning in FOMO (Fear of Missing Out), FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt), and other profit-eroding emotions. Long-term crypto HODLers stay invested because they believe that cryptocurrencies will eventually replace government-issued fiat currencies as the basis of all economic structures. Should that occur, then the exchange rates between cryptocurrencies and fiat money would become irrelevant to crypto holders.

Predictably, a meme best captures this HODL maximalist philosophy. Neo from The Matrix asks Morpheus, "What are you trying to tell me, that I can trade my Bitcoin for millions someday?" Morpheus responds, "No Neo, I'm trying to tell you that when you're ready … you won't have to."

When to HODL

Based on these principles, the best time to HODL is now, always, and forever. A true believer would always hold on to their tokens, even if markets crash or become extremely volatile. HODLing becomes an ideological belief about the long-term prospects of blockchain technology, cryptocurrencies, and the communities that have formed around them.

Other Crypto Slang Terms

The crypto community has adopted several acronyms and terms (often with accompanying emojis) in addition to HODLing. Many of these also overlap with terms used in meme stock communities and forums. Some of these include:

FUD (fear, uncertainty, doubt): Misinformation, negative headlines, and dire predictions about crypto, which should be ignored by true adherents.

FOMO (fear of missing out): People jumping onto bandwagon trades or buying into bubbles rather than regretting missing the next big thing

Diamond Hands : Exhibiting extreme fortitude in HODLing, even as markets crash

Hold the line: A battle cry to encourage others to stand firm with diamond hands in the face of volatility.

Paper hands : This is a derogatory slur leveled against those who fail to maintain diamond hands. These are perceived as weak individuals without conviction who sell their crypto too quickly.

Mooning : The idea that a stock will rise extraordinarily high, as if to the moon.

Apes : Members of the crypto or NFT community. Some have attributed this to a meme related to the movie Rise of the Planet of the Apes, but others have suggested that the label comes from the banding together of “dumb apes” to take on the Wall Street elite.

BTFD (buy the f***ing dip): Buying the dips means going long on a stock after its price has declined in the near term and is meant to be repeated after each such drawdown.

YOLO (you only live once): As in, why not buy into a crypto token or NTF?

Can You HODL Stocks?

While HODLing is generally associated with cryptocurrency investors, the buy-and-hold investing strategy that it represents is not limited to crypto investing.

Many stock investors "HODL" their investments for long periods of time, although stock prices are almost always less volatile than the prices of crypto assets. Investors in stocks who buy and hold can benefit from long-term price appreciation while experiencing much less price volatility than is associated with cryptocurrencies.

The HODL Coin

HODL may also refer to a DeFI token on the Binance Smart Chain (BSC). HODL Coin (SHODL) was launched in May 2021. Much like the term itself, HODL encourages users to hold onto their tokens for rewards in the Binance coin (BNB) that are distributed every three days. The rewards are generated from taxes collected on transactions made by users, such as sale, purchase, or transfer of HODL tokens. The tax amount is converted into BNB tokens and a percentage of the gains is redistributed back to users from the collective liquidity pool.

What Does It Mean to HODL?

"HODL" originated as a misspelling of "HOLD" (written in all caps), in an online post by an early Bitcoin investor. But "HODL", as it has gained popularity among crypto enthusiasts, has come to mean "hold on for dear life". Crypto HODLers, like buy-and-hold stock investors, pride themselves on "holding on" by not selling their cryptocurrency, no matter what happens in the crypto markets.

Who First Said HODL?

The true identity is unknown of the person who inadvertently coined the term "HODL". The original misspelling of the word occurred in a post by the user "GameKyuubi" on the Bitcointalk.org online forum, at 10:03 a.m. UTC on Dec. 18, 2013.

What Is the Difference Between HODL and a Buy-and-Hold Strategy?

There is no difference between HODLing a cryptocurrency and a buy-and-hold strategy. You can HODL a stock through its volatility because you believe in the company's future success. Similarly, you can hold a cryptocurrency for an indefinite length of time, through multiple price changes, because you believe that the coin will do well in the future.

What Is the HODL Coin?

HODL ($HODL) is a cryptocurrency that was named based on the popularity of "HODL" as an expression in the crypto community. The HODL token operates using the Binance Smart Chain, and HODL token owners can earn Binance Coin rewards.

The Bottom Line

HODL is an acronym for "Hold On for Dear Life". It is used in the crypto ecosystem to refer to a strategy of holding onto bitcoin holdings through its various price fluctuations and volatility. The acronym is a misspelling of the word "holding" by a user on an online forum. Typically used by Bitcoin maximalists, a HODLing strategy is similar to the conventional buy-and-hold investing strategy. HODL may also refer to the HODL token on cryptocurrency exchange Binance's Smart Chain. Users can earn rewards in Binance coin by depositing their tokens in a liquidity pool.

Introduction

If you are new to cryptocurrency, trying to find your way around the complex blockchain scene but find that you are often sidelined from conversations, it could be that you are less familiar with the community jargon. Crypto enthusiasts are passionate individuals who have coined their own phrases to distinguish themselves from outsiders.

The first step for a beginner in the blockchain ecosystem is to find out where all the important conversations happen, including social media platforms and chat forums. Next, you should learn the terminology, and part of that is identifying the unique terms and phrases used by members of the community, what they mean and how to use them effectively.

The last step is to dive right in and mingle with the masses.

To get you started on your crypto journey, we have compiled a list of a few commonly used words and expressions, some of which only make sense when used in a crypto context, but some have been borrowed from the conventional investment world.

The term HODL, which has been in use for a few years, is the article’s main point of emphasis. It may strike you as a misspelling, and you will be right, but within the blockchain space, that spelling is correct.

HODLing is a cryptocurrency investment strategy not unique to crypto but rather a rehashed term made to appeal to the eccentric crypto community.

Continue reading to learn more about how it came to be, why it is considered an investment strategy, and other words that you may want to be acquainted with if you wish to be a part of the community.

What does HODL mean?

To ‘HODL’ means to hold on to your cryptocurrency or, more accurately, ‘not to sell.’ You can deduce from this statement that the term HODL is a misspelling of the word ‘HOLD” but in crypto, the misspelling is intentional. The term HODL is also used as an acronym for the phrase “Holding On (for) Dear Life” whose significance we’ll discuss in the next section.

HODLing is an investment strategy derived from the traditional financial world where it is referred to as buy and hold. An investor will acquire an asset to keep it over the long term.

Value investors such as Warren Buffett use this strategy when investing whereby they identify undervalued companies, buy the stocks cheap and hold them for several years. The idea is that the value of the stocks would have risen considerably within this period.

In contrast, other investors choose to time the market, which leads them to make short-term decisions or trades. Compared to buying and holding, market timing needs a lot more skills and expertise, meaning beginners have a disadvantage with this strategy as opposed to value investment.

In crypto, the comparable strategy to value investment would be ‘HODLing,’ which works the same way. An investor identifies a project with great potential and invests in it for the medium to long term. As the project rises in popularity and utility, the value of the project’s token also rises.

It is, however, more difficult to engage in market timing strategies in crypto where price volatility is high. HODLing is an easier and more rational method to take when investing in blockchain projects.

History of HODLing

The term ‘HODL’ has a rather interesting origin. In December 2013, a (self-admitted) intoxicated BitcoinTalk forum member with the pseudonym GameKyuubi wrote a post titled “I AM HODLING.” GameKyuubi was trying to communicate to the other forum members that he was frustrated trying to trade Bitcoin actively.

At the time, the flagship cryptocurrency had lost 50% of its value in two weeks falling from a then all-time high of $1,120 to a low of $560 between December 4th and the 18th. GameKyuubi wrote his post on the 18th, attempting to communicate that he was changing tact to his Bitcoin investment.

Instead of buying low to sell high, i.e., timing the market, he would start HODLing onto his currency and not selling. “In a zero-sum game such as this, traders can only take your money if you sell,” he wrote.

Even though GameKyuubi was intoxicated, he knew he misspelled the title but opted not to change it. “I type d [sic] that title [sic] twice because I knew it was wrong the first time,’ he wrote. “Still wrong.”

Members of the BitcoinTalk forum picked up on that error and started using the term HODL instead of HOLD to refer to the strategy of not selling your assets despite external pressure to sell as the price of the asset falls. Later, the community came up with a new meaning for the term HODL which was “Holding On (for) Dear Life.”

The new definition helped illustrate the gist of HODLing to the masses. It takes a lot of emotional strength not to sell a plummeting asset, hoping that it will revert to greater heights.

Fun factGameKyuubi created an NFT of that December 2013 post and sold it on the Foundation App marketplace. That NFT last sold for 33.50 ETH (!!!).

Understanding the HODL strategy

The HODL strategy has since its origin been used as a community anthem used whenever the price of a digital asset has been rallying. The idea is to discourage selling at the top, which could possibly trigger a reversal of the asset’s price.

HODLing campaigns are also witnessed whenever the price of an asset starts falling. In such a situation, any more selling could lead to further price correction and the best action for the long-term investors is to discourage weak hands from letting go and thereby mitigating further losses.

How to implement HODL

Outside the seasonal HODLing rallies to discourage selling, the buy and HODL strategy is very simple and easy to implement. There are just two steps to it:

Step 1 – Acquire cryptocurrency;

Step 2 – Do not sell;

Step 3 – Sell at the right time.

It is important to know when the right time is because this metric varies from one individual to another. The right time to sell will largely depend on the goals of investing. If these goals are achieved, the coin holder can sell at any price in the market; otherwise, they continue to HODL.

Market conditions might also dictate when to sell. For instance, if the asset is in the middle of a bear market, there will be fewer buyers than there are sellers. For big investors, a falling market might not offer the right conditions to sell. They have to wait for buyers to come in to absorb their large orders. However, if the price is rising, it is much easier to sell.

There are several ways to acquire crypto, including:

Buying;

Mining;

Accepting crypto as payment for goods and services;

Accepting crypto donations;

Participating in competitions and crypto giveaway promotions.

Cryptocurrencies are considered to be highly volatile assets, and it’s not unusual to see daily price changes of 20+% in either direction. Even Bitcoin, now a relatively stable cryptocurrency, still registers 10-20% moves in some days.

Trying to beat the market by timing reversals is an expert’s game, and most newcomers to crypto are not experienced at doing that. HODLing thus becomes a safe play for such individuals and institutions looking for long-term gains rather than gaming the system.

The strategy has proved right for the most part, as some of the larger assets have seen incremental value gains over a number of years. However, if an analyst could zoom into the monthly price action of most of these assets it would be evident that most experienced wild rides in short-term durations.

10 other crypto slang terms to know

Now that you understand what it means to HODL, let’s dive into some of the other popular crypto-related terms that are worth knowing in order to participate in conversations amongst fellow blockchain enthusiasts.

When Lambo/Mooning

The phrase ‘When Lambo’ was especially predominant during the ICO-mania of late 2017 and early 2018. It is a shortened version of the question ‘When can an investment in an asset appreciate enough to buy a Lamborghini?’

Lamborghini supercars have, for a long time, been used as status symbols by wealthy crypto investors, especially those that can attribute a bulk of their wealth to blockchain-related activities.

Mooning is a related term to ‘When Lambo’ that also refers to stratospheric price rallies. If the price of an asset rises very fast, the community equates that rise to a ride on a rocket to the moon which gave rise to the phrase going to the moon or ‘mooning,’ for short.

FOMO

FOMO is an acronym representing the phrase ‘Fear Of Missing Out.’ It is a psychological response whereby investors buy into an asset whose price is already on an upward trajectory because they fear that they might miss out on massive gains.

FUD

FUD is another acronym that stands for ‘Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt.’ Part of the reason why cryptocurrency markets are so volatile is that they are vulnerable to public perceptions. Whenever there is negative press coverage, the value of the entire market will fall and the reverse is true.

Sometimes, a section of the market may manipulate the media to print out false cryptocurrency news about a particular crypto project designed to elicit fear, uncertainty, and doubt in the minds of token holders for them to sell their assets. The manipulators will then scoop up these assets at lower prices.

FUD propagation is a rather common occurrence in crypto, and one has to research the truth behind any assertion to ensure that they do not fall for it.

Rekt

Rekt is a crypto term derived from the word ‘wreck’ which means to destroy or severely damage. To be precise, it is derived from the past tense of that verb which is ‘wrecked.’

It refers to a situation when a crypto investor has encountered a massive loss by being on the wrong side of a trade. As we have mentioned before, cryptocurrencies are highly volatile assets, and there is a high chance that a trader can lose their investment quickly.

The term is, however, used to describe huge losses, and even though ‘huge’ is considered a relative term, losing a lot of coins qualifies as being rekt.

Shill

To shill is another common term within the social media circles of crypto enthusiasts which means to selfishly promote a coin or token.

Individuals who participate in shilling often have a stake in the asset, and by drumming up support for the project behind the asset, they are trying to build up buying pressure which could lead to a price gain.

Shilling is frowned upon because it constitutes dishonesty and selfishness.

Whale

The term whale means a very large marine mammal that lives in the ocean. In crypto, the term is used to refer to individuals or institutions with an outsized investment in a particular asset.

Since large is a relative term, a more acceptable definition of a whale is anyone whose singular actions are able to affect the price of an asset.

BTD/BTFD

These two terms are much more recent additions to the crypto lingo, and they too are acronyms of the phrases ‘Buy The Dip’ for BTD and ‘Buy The F***n Dip’ for BTFD.

Just like HODL, BTD or BTFD is a term used to encourage more investment whenever an asset’s price corrects during a rally, i.e., it dips. The correction is interpreted as a chance to buy more with the expectation that the price will inevitably rebound to the previous high.

Bagholder

Bag holder is a negative term used to describe anyone in possession of a significant amount of coins or tokens whose value has fallen to a level that it is unprofitable to sell.

The phrase makes more sense when used to refer to worthless coins or tokens – also called ‘shitcoins’ – that have little to no utility outside speculation.

Flippening

The term ‘flippening’ is used within the crypto circles to refer to a hypothetical moment in which the market capitalization of Ethereum surpasses that of Bitcoin. The latter is the oldest and largest cryptocurrency by network value and Ethereum’s market cap has trailed Bitcoin’s for several years.

Over the last few years, the gap between the network valuations of the two leading blockchain assets has been dropping, leading some analysts to predict that Ethereum and Bitcoin might flip in ranking. Hence, the term flippening, which is an amalgamation of the words ‘flip’ and ‘happening.’

Pump and dump

Crypto pump and dump is an investment scheme in which instigators buy large positions in low-cap (market capitalization) coins or tokens before shilling these assets to other investors. The intention is to create an artificial price increase leading to a substantial profit.

However, since they have outsized positions, they need to sell while everyone is buying, so they keep shilling the asset as they offload their positions and once they stop pushing it. Typically, the price of the asset comes crashing down as the latter buyers look to exit their positions.

Low cap coins are ideal for pump and dump schemes since instigators do not need to make huge investments to achieve the desired price action.

Final thoughts

The cryptocurrency world is full of exciting and interesting eccentricities, including the lingo. Hopefully, by going through this article, you have familiarized yourself with some of the more common unique terminologies used within the blockchain space.

There are several more words that we did not cover in this guide but we are sure you will run into as you interact with other community members. Be observant, keen, and keep an open mind when interacting with other enthusiasts in chat forums and on social media. It is the kind of mindset that will help you learn and contribute more positively to the community.

FAQs

What does HODL stand for?

HODL was originally a misspelling of the word ‘HOLD,’ which later morphed into an acronym for the phrase ‘Hold On (for) Dear Life.’

What does HODL mean?

HODL means holding on to an investment position no matter how volatile the price action gets. It is a rallying cry by the blockchain community encouraging the weak hands to hold on to their positions whenever the price rises to stratospheric heights or starts plummeting down to earth.

Where did the term “HODL” come from?

The term ‘HODL’ was first used by a BitcoinTalk forum member going by the pseudonym GameKyuubi on December 18th, 2013. GameKyuubi wrote a post to the forum titled “I AM HODLING” and proceeded to pen a semi-intelligible post attempting to explain his new investment strategy while (admittedly) intoxicated. The title was a deliberate misspelling he bothered not to correct.

Is HODL a good strategy?

HODLing is a sound investment strategy that has been successfully applied even within the traditional markets. However, its efficacy depends on the investor’s goals. HODLing might not be the best strategy if the investor is looking for short-term gains. It is ideal for long-term plays.

另一種說法是 "Hold On for Dear Life(為生堅守) "的縮寫。

Quick LinksHODL = HOLD The Origin of Hodl "Hodl" and Cryptocurrencies Why Do People "Hodl?" Using "HODL"

You're scrolling through social media, and you encounter someone saying that they're "HODLING" or telling someone else to "HODL." Confused? Here's what the word means in the world of cryptocurrency and finance---and why it's not misspelled.

HODL = HOLD

"HODL" is a cryptocurrency-related slang that stands for the word "hold" misspelled. It often refers to retaining crypto assets that you own for an extended period, even throughout a highly volatile market movement. "Hodl" is meant to encourage people to not impulsively sell when a cryptocurrency drops dramatically or rises to become highly profitable to sell.

"HODL" also acts as an acronym for "Hold on for dear life." You will often see the term in various cryptocurrency forums and social media circles. Some influencers even encourage their followers to "hodl" various crypto tokens as part of their long-term strategy.

The Origin of Hodl

The word "hold" has been used in finance for a very long time as part of the buy-and-hold strategy. This investing method involves buying a financial asset and holding it for an indefinite period of time. This is related to the view that an investor should not be swayed by short-term market movements and look to the long-term view.

Related: What Is Bitcoin, and How Does it Work? The term "HODL" originates from a post made in 2013 on cryptocurrency forum Bitcointalk shortly after a move by the Chinese government caused the price of Bitcoin to fall drastically within a day. An intoxicated member typed out a post entitled "I AM HODLING" in response, detailing his general lousy luck with investing and his desire to keep holding onto his assets in the future.

Soon after that incident, the term "hodling" became commonplace in the cryptocurrency enthusiast community. It made its way into memes and onto social media and became a way of signaling a token owner's desire to hang onto their assets.

"Hodl" and Cryptocurrencies

The biggest reason why "hodl" has become such a popular term is the general volatility of the prices of cryptocurrencies. Many cryptocurrency tokens, even relatively stable ones such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, frequently have very volatile market swings. The cost of these tokens can fall 100% one month and then rise 300% within the next few months.

Cryptocurrency prices are also prone to the movements of whales (a term for people or organizations that hold a very large amount of a particular token). If even one whale decides to sell a particular token, they could tank the price entirely.

"HODL" is viewed as a way to combat these swings in price. An asset-holder who follows the strategy does not sell, even as the market changes. Many people who "HODL" do not even pay close attention to the day-to-day market movement of cryptos, instead preferring to take a long-term view of their tokens.

Why Do People "Hodl?"

Andreanicolini/Shutterstock.com

One of the biggest reasons why people view "hodl" as a viable strategy is their belief in the underlying technology and the use case behind it. Bitcoin and most other cryptocurrencies are based on a technology called blockchain, which has many uses, including a way to safely and anonymously make payments over the internet. Some people believe that Bitcoin is the future of all financial transactions rather than fiat currencies like Dollars and Euros.

Related: What Is a "Blockchain"?

For many cryptocurrency owners, "hodling" is an intriguing prospect. The value of a single Bitcoin has gone from under a dollar when it first came out more than a decade ago to five-digit figures in recent years. Despite high market volatility, many cryptocurrency owners believe in the long-term financial prospects of Bitcoin and other tokens. At the same time, many other people believe that buying cryptocurrency is equivalent to gambling.

Many people also believe that the values of cryptocurrencies are better when people buy and do not sell off their tokens. That is why "hodl" is such a well-used term in the community---it's often said to beginners who might have fears about holding such a volatile asset. "HODL" combats what crypto users call "FUD," which stands for "fear, uncertainty, and doubt." FUD can include anything from naysayers to governments to negative presses on the issue of cryptocurrency.

Using "HODL"

"HODL" is generally only used to refer to cryptocurrencies and not other assets. If you want to use the term "hodl," reserve it for conversations about these tokens or you could be misinterpreted.

If you run into people telling you to "hodl," there's a good chance that you've encountered cryptocurrency enthusiasts. Be sure to use good judgment in making critical financial decisions, such as purchasing a cryptocurrency. Never invest more than you can afford to lose.

后来,大家将这个“HODL”用非常幽默的方法来解释了一下:“HODL” – ““Hold on for dear life”而就在最近,与“HODL”一样非常有话题性的“BUIDL”出现了。 “ATH” ALL TIME HIGH的缩略语。
